Sanger was founded in 1888 and incorporated in 1911, with a historic railroad depot built in 1887 that became the Sanger Depot Museum in 1977.
Sanger takes its name from Joseph Sanger Jr., an official with the Pacific Improvement Company, and was founded in 1888 when the company owned and sold lots on the site and established the first post office. The city was formally incorporated on May 9, 1911, cementing its place as a legal municipality. The Sanger Depot, built in 1887 as a working railroad station, survived the city's growth and transition; in 1977 it was restored and opened as the Sanger Depot Museum, preserving the city's transportation heritage.
In 1949, Sanger received a distinctive honor from the U.S. Postal Service: it was designated the Nation's Christmas Tree City, a distinction that appears on the city's official motto and reflects both the tree-growing heritage of the surrounding region and Sanger's identity as a place that ships agricultural products across the country. The downtown continues to serve as the civic center, with City Hall, the library, and the Depot Museum anchoring the community.
